Rome City Schools' professional educators take pride in the performance of the students, teachers, and administrators, who have worked hard to build an excellent school system Through the efforts of many people the system has gained state, regional and national recognition.

Rome City Schools' emphasis on excellence has paid rich dividends. Some of these include:

  • Ten Rome City Schools have earned the coveted Pay-For-Performance Awards granted by the State Department of Education, two of these schools in every year since its inception. Rome Middle School (nine times), Southeast Elementary (two times), Elm Street Elementary (nine times), Anna K. Davie Elementary (one time), East Central Elementary (five times), Main Elementary (one time), Rome High School (four times), North Heights Elementary (one time), West End Elementary (three times), and West Central Elementary (one time).

  • The Rome High School Math Team was undefeated during the 2002-2003 season and Rome High students claimed first, second, third, and fourth place in the Individual Competitions at the Northwest Georgia RESA Math Meet.

  • System SAT Scores exceed state and national averages. The average combined score of all students taking the SAT at Rome High in 2003 was 1028. The average combined score of all college preparatory students was 1061. The top ten percent of test takers at Rome High scored an average of 1396.

  • Rome High School had ten National Merit Finalists from 2002-2003 and eight were awarded National Merit Scholarships. One student was named a National Hispanic Scholar.

  • Elm Street Elementary was named a 2002 Georgia School of Excellence. East Central Elementary took the award in 1999, West End Elementary in 1998, Rome Middle and Rome High Schools in 1996.

  • All ten schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

  • Rome Middle School received a grant to develop an agriscience program during the 2002-2003 school year.

  • Rome City Schools was designated by the Georgia Council for School Performance as one of ten “Star Systems worthy of study.”

  • Rome High students won four of the seven state championships in the National History Day Competition in 2002-2003. RHS students finished second in each of the other three events. Twenty students qualified for Nationals.

  • The Rome High School Academic Bowl Team has finished first or second in Northwest Georgia for five consecutive years.

  • Four of Rome City Schools personnel have received their National Board Teacher’s Certification.

  • Eleven Advanced Placement courses were taught and tested at Rome High during 2002-2003. Six areas had 100% of students scoring a three or higher. Rome High also had 17 AP Scholars in 2002.

  • Advanced Degrees, including masters, six-year, and doctoral degrees, are held by more than 58 percent of the Rome City Schools teachers and administrators. All staff are properly certified.

  • Rome Middle School was the first school in Georgia to initiate a Wetlands Adoption Program.

  • Rome High School won three state championships in athletics during 2002-2003.

  • During the past eight years, six Rome High students have received congressional appointments to national military academies.

  • Seven Rome High band members were named to All-State Bands in 2002-2003. Four of those students placed first chair in their instrument.
