Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

Rome City Schools MTSS aligns with the Georgia Multi-Tiered System of Supports (GaMTSS). MTSS is a data-driven, multi-level prevention system designed to meet the needs of the whole child by implementing a continuum of tiered supports. The efforts of RCS’s MTSS framework and support is grounded in the belief that academics, behavior, and wellbeing are interconnected and impact student success. By integrating academics, behavior, and wellbeing data, systems, and practices, teams can align efforts to address barriers to learning and improve outcomes.

Academics

The academic component of the MTSS framework focuses on instruction and student performance in core subject areas. Data used to identify concerns and monitor progress may include screeners, formative assessments, and summative evaluations.

Behavior

Student behavior serves as a form of communication and can signal needs related to academics or wellbeing. Thus, understanding the reasons behind behavior is crucial. The behavior aspect of the MTSS framework encompasses behavior outcomes like attendance and discipline data, as well as the proactive, tiered support system designed for all students. MTSS incorporates research on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which is vital for supporting the Whole Child.

Wellbeing

The wellbeing of both adults and students plays a crucial role in fostering a positive school climate and ensuring school success. Collaboration among community partners, parents, and educators is essential to prepare students for learning and achievement. This involves creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments and tackling non-academic obstacles such as food insecurity, hearing or vision loss, bullying, and prevention of suicide and abuse. By examining wellbeing data alongside academic and behavioral information, teams can more effectively pinpoint obstacles to success and develop strategies for improvement

The essential components of MTSS are vital for its success, and together, these components create an effective, responsive framework for improving student outcomes.
