It was a packed house at the Rome City Auditorium, Tuesday night, Jan. 25, as West End Elementary welcomed parents, students and faculty to Honors Night for the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year.
Principal Dr. Dennis Drummond addressed the enthusiastic crowd with pride for the 225 students that would be honored for grades three through six.
Each grade level recognized two tiers of achievement: Best of the West and High Honor Roll. Drummond explained that Best of the West students earned all As for the first semester as well as top marks in their work habits and conduct.
Best of the West students all received a T-shirt and a magnet, both of which were compliments of the WEE Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).
High Honor Roll students earned all As and Bs in their academic work as well as top marks in work habits and conduct.
Each grade level recognized their team of teachers before presenting the students. Upon being recognized, each student entered stage left and received a congratulatory fist bump from their teachers, principal and assistant principal before taking their place next to their peers center stage.
Drummond said that the group of students honored was the largest he’d ever seen at West End. He expressed his gratitude for amazing teachers, support staff and parents.
“It feels phenomenal to be recognizing this group of students,” he said. “It’s testament to the hard work that our kids do every day. It’s a testament to their resiliency in overcoming obstacles. This is the most amazing group of kids I think I’ve ever worked with in terms of being flexible; whether we’re in phase one or phase two [of the RCS COVID-19 Decision Matrix], they’re there every day.”
A prideful round of applause erupted from the audience after each group of students was presented.
Assistant Principal Lisa Strack concluded the evening as she thanked the families for their presence and their support, “Thank you all so very much for joining us tonight. We are so proud of all of our boys and girls at West End and we love them so much.”
Way to go, young Wolves!
