Rome City Schools Board Meeting August 2022

ROME, GA— Rome City Schools Board of Education met on Aug. 9, 2022, for their scheduled August meeting at the Rome City Schools College and Career Academy.

After the opening prayer and Pledge of Allegiance, the Board recognized students in the SkillsUSA, FCCLA, and the FFA programs.

Board members then recognized educators who completed several parts of the Aspiring Leaders Program.

Next, the Board heard from five community members who wished to give a public comment. Each was given two minutes to address the Board.

The RCS Board also approved the hiring of all personnel. Interim Superintendent Dr. Dawn Williams gave the Superintendent’s Report where she addressed key dates, and important events coming for Rome City Schools. Board members also heard and approved all school fundraisers currently submitted for the 2022-2023 school year.

Dr. Williams presented the Board with information regarding safety and security. She covered the new protocols and highlighted existing procedures during the meeting. The report also covered future plans the system is implementing to further enhance safety and security on all campuses.

RCS Board members also approved the first reading of a revision to Policy JCAB that covers interviewing and searching students while at school.

Director of Social Services Kirsten Thornante detailed a program that will assist in reporting instances of bullying and collecting data that can be used for training faculty and staff. The program is called BRIM or Bullying Reduction Intervention and Monitoring. The goal is to allow any person in the school who uses the software to report any problems they may see in a school setting anonymously. Students and stakeholders can also report maintenance needs or make suggestions or comments for consideration. The platform is $600 per school, or $5400 for all nine schools. Thornante also suggested that the hotline service be added at $1000 per year.

The meeting was then adjourned.
