Educators at Anna K. Davie Elementary School decided to get a head start on spreading holiday cheer and pass on valuable information to families just before the Thanksgiving break. The school’s Dine and Learn event was created by Felisha Jackson and AKD faculty members to provide a meal and food for thought about the education plan in place for their young Wolves.
Jackson partnered with Honey Baked Hams to offer parents a meal. Educators met with parents who had signed up to receive the meal as they drove through the parking lot after school. Parents were also given a packet of information detailing resources and programs the school has implemented to help their children learn.
Anna K. Davie representatives met briefly with each parent and explained to them the process of taking an active role at home in the education of their child. Jackson said this event is one they plan to host at least once a year.
“This is just one of the annual events we have started that offers us a chance to fellowship with our parents in a different environment. We felt like we wanted to offer more than just a parent conference,” Jackson explained. “We wanted to host our parents here at the school and have more one-on-one time to explain the information we are giving out today. But because of the concern surrounding COVID-19, we partnered with Honey Baked Hams to provide a meal on the go. Based on the grade level of each parent’s child, our teachers put together a packet of information that explains what our students are learning throughout the year.”
Jackson said that the response from parents has been positive.
“We did have parents to RSVP, but we are seeing more show up for this event,” she said. “We had about 27 parents to RSVP, but we are expecting around 100 families to come through the line today.”
This effort involved every staff and faculty member at AKD. From the assistant principal to the front office staff, everyone pitched in to start the holiday season with a special gift for parents from the school.
“I cannot express how proud I am of our faculty members who helped to organize this event and of our parents who are taking an active role in the education of their children,” Jackson said. “We work hard to create a family atmosphere here at AKD and the relationships we are building will allow great things to continue to happen here.”
Go Wolves!!!
